Explosion Hazards are in the process of launching the all new ‘Atex Passive Protection System’. Only last week we launched this product at the Recycling and Waste Management (RWM) conference at the NEC Birmingham and received a flattering reception.

As long as ATEX has been providing Explosion Protection Systems a truly passive system without many unworkable constraints was not available. Either the system could not handle the product flow without major restrictions to the dust loading or it had to be monitored for dust fall out because of the design limitations.

While the benefits of standard ATEX Active Control Systems eliminated many of the false activation and maintenance disadvantages of other systems, it still required a high degree of maintenance procedures. Vent users were increasingly aware that protection of a Dust collector or other process vessel required isolation to provide true protection against secondary and catastrophic events.

ATEX engineers set about to provide a full passive protection System approach. Vent systems provided many options for venting. Solutions were available for many industrial applications. Vents were available that reset themselves and were flameless in design for indoor use. They lowered the costly inspections to visual and annual inspections verse the technically advanced inspections required by active systems or those requiring active maintenance.

But the options available for the necessary isolation function were limited with a decision based on benefits verse limitations. No true Passive Solution was available to industrial users, until now.

To meet the need ATEX developed its clean out technology in a passive oriented system. A valve that could meet the product flow requirements of today’s processes. I am proud and confident to be working with this new system and I invite you take a better look at it on my website where I will provide more detailed specifications, tailored solutions and images.

Tinytag ATEX Rated Data Loggers

tiny-tag-oct-13The Tinytag range of data loggers includes specialist ATEX validated units for measuring and recording temperature and humidity in intrinsically safe areas.

They are used across many industries including petrochemicals; in gas sterilization processes where highly flammable Ethylene Oxide is used; in enclosed environments such as paint spray departments within the automotive and marine sectors; during the transportation of hazardous materials; and also in military applications.

The Tinytag Plus IS data logger uses a static-dissipative case material to prevent ignition by static-electric discharge. The logger incorporates power-limiting components for the lithium battery and the communications port is fuse protected to prevent fault conditions from damaging the electronics and compromising safety.

The loggers record over time as opposed to taking spot readings, and can be left in hazardous areas for long periods to provide a complete environmental profile. They have a rugged, waterproof and dustproof design and can be used in damp or wet conditions.

Manufactured in the UK, the full Tinytag range includes a wide choice of units for accurately monitoring temperature, humidity, single and three phase power usage, CO2 and other environmental parameters across many industries and applications. Data from the loggers is downloaded to a PC via a USB connection and viewed with easy to use Tinytag Explorer software. This Windows program is used to set up the loggers and view recorded data. During set up, logger names, logging intervals and alarm settings can easily be chosen. Recorded data can be shown as a graph, table of readings and summary information, and can easily be copied and pasted or exported into popular packages. Information from multiple logging runs or multiple loggers can also be combined into the same graph or table.

Innovative omni-directional output option for BEx sounders

e2s-oct-13E2S has introduced a new option for its market-leading BEx range of explosion proof sounders. A new design of output horn turns the sound 90 degrees into a radial, omni-directional pattern without reducing the unit’s sound output levels. This is especially suited to combined sounder/beacon units that are normally installed with the beacon at the top and the horn facing downwards so that the sound output is pointing directly at the floor, limiting its range and impact. In addition to improving the effectiveness of the BEx combined units, the radial horn offers a smaller footprint than the directional one, allowing the units to be installed in locations where space is restricted. For full information, visit us here.

The new “-R” version can be specified for all existing BEx sounders and combination units. The Four-stage, 45 tone BEx range is available in both EEx d and EEx de ratings, and is approved for use in gas Zones 1 and 2 and dust Zones 21 and 22. The family consists of 117 dB @ 1m and 123 dB @ 1m sounders, the Hootronic versions that faithfully mimic the traditional electromechanical siren, buzzer and bell, 15 and 25 Watt loudspeakers and 5, 10, 15 and 21 Joule beacons.

E2S specialises in the design and manufacture of a comprehensive range of sounders, beacons, loudspeakers, voice alarms and disaster sirens for the oil & gas, hazardous area, industrial and marine markets.

New Intrinsically-safe Infrared Thermometer from Fluke

fluke-oct-13-1Fluke, the global leader in portable electronic test and measurement technology, has introduced a new, intrinsically-safe, infra-red (IR) thermometer, designed for electrical and HVAC installation and maintenance technicians and plant maintenance professionals working in hazardous (Zones 1 & 2) gas and vapour environments in process industries such as petroleum, oil and gas, chemical and pharmaceutical. With a 50:1 distance-to-spot ratio, it provides accurate measurements far away from inaccessible or potentially dangerous locations.

New Dräger test and calibration station to boost gas safety and reduce costs

hes-sep-13-2Leading safety specialist, Dräger, is launching a new product which will help the oil and gas industry stay on top of the testing and calibration of its portable gas detection instruments, at the same time as saving time and money.

The Dräger X-dock is an instrument calibration and management system which allows companies to complete automatic bump testing and calibration in seconds, using just a fraction of the test gas traditionally used with many other systems.

Significantly, the X-dock also offers a robust documentation and reporting function so that users can see the status of their portable gas detection instrument fleet at a glance and can produce calibration certificates without the need for a computer or printer.

With hundreds of very different and hazardous gases found in the oil and gas industry, the X-dock has the flexibility and range of multiple gas inlets to facilitate the use of different gas mixtures for testing and calibration, making it a highly advanced piece of technology.

No two oil and gas companies are the same and with the diverse range of chemical processes and species processed and used in each plant, the three different versions of the X-dock available, ensure that every area is covered.

New Dräger flame detector offers superior protection in most hazardous environments

hes-sep-13-1Blyth – Draeger Safety UK launches the new Dräger Flame 3000, a highly advanced explosion-proof image processing flame detector, in response to an increasing demand for safety in the Oil and Gas industry.

The United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS) includes some of the world’s most challenging and hostile working environments for oil and gas extraction.

The maturing and ageing nature of offshore installations in the UKCS present particular and increasing challenges to the delivery of high standards of safety and protection.

Safety culture remains top priority for the Health Safety Executive’s Offshore Division, with employers increasingly concerned that essential safety equipment is in place, enabling employees to carry out work safely and to a high standard offshore.

Sick launches world’s first ultrasonic gas meter for the industrial & commercial market for new levels of accuracy and reliability

Sick12344

SICK is launching the world’s first ultrasonic flow meter for industrial & commercial metering, the FLOWSIC500, which promises to achieve new levels of precision measurement in gas metering for commercial, industrial, power and utility users.
With no moving parts, the SICK FLOWSIC500 promises long term stability, ease of installation and minimal maintenance compared to conventional mechanical meters.   The meter is expected to be especially beneficial to critical applications such as continuous industrial processes, power stations and hospitals, where supply interruptions would be hazardous or costly.
The FLOWSIC500 will form the centrepiece of the SICK UK stand at the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers’ Gas Metering Seminar in Kegworth, Derbyshire on April 23 2013.  Says Andrew Wrath, Product Specialist for Sick UK:
“We are very excited about the launch of the FLOWSIC500, because it truly represents a step-change for industrial gas flow meters.   This ultrasonic technology offers many advantages for both the installer and the asset owner with much simpler installation and hardly any maintenance requirements.
“Ultrasound technology, already widely used for high pressure measurement in the National Trasmission System is now available for low pressure and gas distribution flow metering.”
The ultrasonic meter can be installed in any orientation without the need for inlet/outlet pipe runs and can also be fitted as a straight replacement for conventional technology (such as turbine and rotary displacement meters).  The integrated volume corrector also saves installation space and cost compared to conventional meters.
The Sick FLOWSIC500 is virtually maintenance and wear-free. Replacement and recalibration of the ultrasound cartridge is quick and easy, ensuring minimal downtime.  The new meter is self monitoring, using in-built diagnostics, including self-checking set-points and alarms to protect against drift and accuracy variations over time.
The SICK FLOWSIC500 offers optional integrated volume correction under, in built data logging and a range of interface options.   It can be used in hazardous zones and the 5/10 year battery back-up option ensures continued operation even in the event of a power supply failure.
