The world’s easiest cable gland to fit

A cable gland performs two basic functions, namely fastening the cable to the apparatus so that it cannot pull out and also earthing the cable armouring to which it is connected.

Cable termination manufacturer Pratley produces a uniquely adjustable cable gland for SWA cable that fits any size armouring. The adjustability of the gland makes it “the world’s easiest to fit,” asserts Marketing Director Eldon Kruger.

Non-Metallic Cable Gland Pots

Matt Ogden, Cable Gland Product Specialist at Hawke International, the leading manufacturer of glands for harsh and hazardous environments, discusses the limitations of using glands with metallic compound pots, and the benefits delivered by transparent, non-metallic alternatives.

In hazardous environments, every item of equipment – no matter how small – must successfully play its part. This absolutely includes cable glands, tasked with protecting extremely expensive machinery. But cable gland strategies are too often overlooked.

This is a mistake. Cable glands are not commodity products, not mere bits of brass and rubber. Indeed, there have been some recent developments with the development of non-metallic compound pots, which could have a profound effect on organisations working in hazardous environments. So let’s take a closer look at the merits of non-metallic compound pots for cable glands compared to more traditional, metallic pots.

Concentrations of hazardous substances such as benzene must never exceed the defined limits in ambient workplace air.

Reliably monitoring low concentrations of these substances can often be a highly demanding task. The new innovative Dräger X-act® 7000 analysis device is designed to solve this problem.

Consisting of Dräger MicroTubes and opto-electronic sensor technology, the device lets you precisely measure gases in the low ppb range. It gives you reliable results right on site with the potential to replace slow, expensive lab analysis. It's also extremely easy to use: insert the Dräger MicroTubes, start measuring, then read out the test result.

The sensitive measurement system is based on colorimetric chemical sensor technology. In combination with the multiple layers of the MicroTubes, this also provides high selectivity, significantly reducing false-positive measurement results and false alarms.

Dräger MicroTubes are already available for substances including benzene, ethylene oxide, 1.3-butadiene, formaldehyde and mercury with many more due to launch in the coming months.
