How does European Directive 89/656/CEE relate to safe working at height?

Falls are the second leading cause of accidental or unintentional injury deaths worldwide. In the UK in 2019/20, falls from height accounted for 26% of all workplace deaths1. In France, each year, more than 10% of all accidents at work are due to falls from height2. While in Germany, from 2009 to 2016, they accounted 432 workplace deaths3.

These figures are a stark reminder that working at height demands a clear and robust understanding of risk - especially by companies engaged in heavy industry, due to the more complex nature of hazards and safety requirements. One of the best ways to do this is keep on top of the latest guidance and legislation.

These can, however, be complicated and difficult to interpret. To help simplify this, MSA has published a whitepaper supporting site owners and duty holders, to translate European Directive 89/656/CEE into safe working at height practices.

The whitepaper:

  • Looks at the unique complexities of fall protection in heavy industry
  • Examines key elements of the Directive, explaining how each one relates to certain aspects of working at height
  • Frames the Directive in the context of region-specific regulations
  • Sets out the risks to businesses not implementing effective fall protection measures

If you want to better understand working at height and how to protect your workers and business, then download this whitepaper. It’s a reference guide to turn to time and again to help ensure that you’re delivering the highest standards in fall protection.
