Gone are the days when a MegOhm meter and a digital multi-meter were the main tools in electrical maintenance.  Advances in technology now offer engineering professionals both off-line and on-line (real time) instruments to verify the health of rotating machinery.  

Modern on-line technologies permit assessment of the ‘whole motor system’, which is comprised of three components:  power, motor & load.  By focusing on these three components, troubleshooting now becomes truly predictive!

Air Bearings Ltd (ABL) of Poole, Dorset, are Queen’s Award winners for Export and Innovation in the design and manufacture of high speed air bearing spindle motors. Their use of the Whitelegg Baker AWA 2.2 analyser enables rapid testing of each motor ensuring total quality control.

Non contact bearing systems offer significant advantages over other low friction devices. In an air bearing the surfaces in motion are separated by a thin film of pressurised air acting under the laws of physics.

Spares management is a complex issue for manufacturers, almost regardless of the sector in which they are operating. Rapid access to spares is of course vital to maintaining continuity of production and avoiding costly downtime.

For the first time, the new catalogue brings together these modular positioning elements as a complete range of simple yet flexible building blocks for single or multi-axis positioning systems where economic pricing and uncompromised performance are important selection criteria for medium duty and medium to high precision applications.

Battery powered vehicles have been with us for many years and acknowledged as the workhorses for the milk delivery industry, as golfing buggies and in many other niche or specialist applications.Latterly the impact of two major drivers has focused greater attention on the acceptability and benefits of electric vehicles, thrusting them once more into the headlines; these being the rocketing price of hydrocarbons and city pollution.

It was in 1816 that the Revd. Robert Stirling propounded the idea of a heat engine which he termed an ‘Economiser’ now universally known as a ‘Stirling Engine’. The operational concept is that it acted as a heat exchanger, retaining heat from the hot portion of the engine as air passed to the cold side, and released heat to the cooled air as it returned to the hot side and in the process converting energy to mechanical work, with near perfect efficiency.

Stirling engines were widely developed in the 19C until the advent of the electric motor superseded it. Modern versions of the engine are in existence, having been used for specialist civil and military applications. But the need for the development of alternative power sources and the availability of modern technology and materials have resulted in renewed interest and exciting developments in this area.
