Key Differences Between Standard and Intrinsically Safe Torches

Hazardous Environments

Intrinsically safe torches are rated and certified for use in explosive atmospheres and hazardous environments where even the slightest spark can result in an explosion. Standard torches have no consideration for limiting sparks and are extremely dangerous to use in a potentially explosive atmosphere.

Body Materials

Standard torches are generally made from a low-cost ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) plastic. In contrast, intrinsically safe torches are made from very costly materials like Polycarbonate/ABS Alloy with permanently static dissipative UV stabilized additives. These additives dissipate static electricity that can build up on the surface of the light to prevent sparks and cost twice as much as standard ABS plastic. Additionally, IS torches must posse unique design features to contain battery leakage and venting for gases produced in the event of a battery malfunction.

Lens Materials

Standard torches are traditionally made out of transparent polycarbonate plastic. Intrinsically safe torches also use transparent polycarbonate but require an additional (and costly) special coating that dissipates static electricity.

Circuitry

Intrinsically safe torches require professional electrical engineers to design and develop circuits specifically created to meet the requirements necessary to pass the strict certification levels for an intrinsically safe rating. This is achieved by designing circuits that prevent or limit spark energy through the use of fuses, redundant circuit paths, diodes, and other components. Standard torches have an on/off switch.

Special Fasteners

Because intrinsically safe torches are rated for use in hazardous and explosive environments, they must remain sealed in and around those areas. This requires that torches not be opened to change batteries even by accident while in a hazardous environment, and thus, a special retention screw or "special fastener" is used to keep the light from being opened. A standard torch is easily opened, usually by unscrewing one end of the light.

Glamox to reduce carbon footprint of LED luminaires by switching to recycled aluminium

  • 63 percent reduction in emissions of CO2 equivalents for aluminum
  • Will eliminate annual emissions of 1,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalents on three product lines

Oslo, Norway, 13 March, 2023 – Glamox AS, a leading lighting company, is progressing towards its goal of Net Zero operations by 2030. Today it announced that it has started to switch from using virgin aluminium to recycled aluminium in manufacturing its LED luminaires. The company has already made the switch for one of its most popular luminaires and is preparing to extend it to other families. The move will further lower the carbon footprint of the company and those customers who purchase the already energy-efficient LED luminaires for use in professional buildings.

Recycled aluminium is created by re-melting scrap metal. The process is less expensive and energy-intensive than creating new aluminium, which is made by the electrolysis of aluminum oxide, which must first be mined from bauxite ore and then fired.

“We’ve already implemented the plan to shift over to recycled aluminium in the manufacture of a popular luminaire which will result in a 63 percent reduction in the emissions of CO2 equivalents over using new aluminium in these profiles,” said Birger Holo, Technical Director, Professional Business Solutions, Glamox. “By adding two new product lines we estimate that we will eliminate a total of 1,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalents each year, which equals the amount of carbon sequestered by nearly 1,200 acres of forest a year.”

The Glamox C35 and C95 LED luminaire ranges are earmarked to be the next products to join the Glamox C80 luminaire range in using recycled aluminium. All three product lines are manufactured in Keila, Estonia. Together they represent around 400,000 products sold yearly, using a combined 300 tonnes of aluminium.

The company is also progressively eliminating plastic in its packaging, replacing bubble wrap and Styrofoam with materials that are easier to recycle. This has been done for its Glamox C35 and C95 luminaires.  Also, it recently launched an Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) generator. Based on international standards, this tool documents the environmental footprint of products taking into account their lifecycle.

“We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but we are committed to helping our customers to reduce their carbon footprint and for us to achieve Net Zero operations by 2030. It’s not enough providing energy-efficient LED lighting, we must ensure that every facet of our operations and supply chain minimises our environmental impact,” said Viktor Söderberg, Business Development Director, who heads up the company’s sustainability programme.

In the tunnels, Peli Safety torches were used in a scenario to evacuate a casualty. ATEX Zone Torches

In a hazardous environment, portable lighting must be engineered to prevent a spark from occurring and igniting any flammable vapors or mists in the area. The ATEX and IECEx Zone systems were created to classify the different danger levels in these areas.

First Laser Open Path H2S Gas Detector for safety related applications

Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection is unveiling its GD1 laser-based gas detector with full SIL2 3rd party approval. This ground-breaking development means that the GD1 SIL2 is the market´s first open-path gas detector for hydrogen sulphide (H2S) safety-related applications

The global importance of SIL (Safety Integrity Level) has grown substantially in the oil, gas, petrochemical and other process industries over the past 10 years. It makes sense, therefore, that devices such as gas detectors demonstrate their suitability and competence in line with the latest SIL2 third-party certification. The GD1 from Teledyne GFD first entered the market in 2011, with well over 1600 units since deployed at oil and gas exploration and production (Onshore & Offshore) companies throughout the Middle East and the rest of the world.

With its new certification, the GD1 is now suitable for use in systems with SIL2 requirements. To provide some context, a typical SIL1 ATEX-certified gas detection device/system will come complete with the functional approval according to IEC 60079-29-3 and require regular maintenance. The step from SIL1 to SIL2 requires built-in automatic self-testing of hardware components and this means reduced maintenance intervals for sensors, and reduced downtime. GD1 complies to the latest standard for IEC 60079-0:2017 (IECEx).

Teledyne GFD´s innovative GD1 will prove attractive in SIL2 applications for several reasons, not in the least its unique customized tunable laser diode that eliminates environmental effects from sun, rain or fog. In fact, the GD1 can operate with up to 98% obscuration, boosting overall site safety. This capability is possible because light emitted by the detector travels as a cone from one point to another, rather than as a conventional straight beam. In other words, the beam expands after transmission and is almost a meter in diameter when it reaches the receiver mounted 75m away.

It can therefore penetrate harsh environments that competitor solutions may find difficult. With its fast and fail-safe laser, the GD1 performs real-time dual automatic calibration and automatic proof testing, thus eliminating the need for manual intervention and reducing maintenance costs. Further advantages include low power consumption (15W), very long lifespan and a high sampling/detection rate of 8000 times per second thanks to its ultra-stable optomechanical construction. All these added-value characteristics mean the GD1 can replace multiple standard detectors to cover the same risk, making it an economic solution that typically demonstrates real cost savings within two years.
